Relationship Trust: Betrayal, Lying and Cheating–Can You Create Trust Again in Your Marriage?

By Susie and Otto Collins, Relationship Coaches

One of the biggest questions people ask after infidelity has been discovered is about relationship trust.

People want to know if they can ever simply relax, enjoy and trust their partner again without being threatened, insecure and reliving the affair in their minds.

We realize that rebuilding relationship trust after an affair is no easy matter.

One way to begin is to make a conscious decision to reframe your beliefs about what is possible in YOUR life and what you want for your experience.

Ask yourself what trusting your partner would mean and then tell him or her your thoughts.  If you both want to rebuild your relationship after an affair, begin to consciously decide what it would mean to rebuild relationship trust. What actions would need to happen in order for there to be trust between the two of you?

Then begin focusing on what you want while not closing your eyes to what’s actually happening. You can choose to focus on the cheating, lying and betrayal or we can choose to spend your time focusing on what you want which is to redevelop relationship trust.

You may be reading this and saying that this is easy for us to say but we’re here to tell you that this is one of the most important things you can do if you want to rebuild your relationship trust after an affair. What if you feel that your mate is actually betraying you again?

Don’t keep your head in the sand. Decide what you want in your life and what you are willing to “put up with.” Focus on what you want but state your boundaries in the relationship. Be willing to stand by what you want for your life experience. If you don’t, no one else will.

Your choice is to begin focusing on possibilities for your life and what you want or staying stuck in mistrust. Relationship trust will never end if you continue to harbor doubt and suspicion towards your partner.
